Appenzeller Noble Memorial Museum

The Appenzeller Noble Memorial Museum (배재학당 역사 박물관) offers international travelers an insightful look into the origins of modern Western-style education in South Korea. Located in Jung-gu, Seoul, this cultural facility preserves the legacy of missionary Henry Gerhart Appenzeller, who opened Korea's first Western-style educational institution in 1885.

History and Highlights at Appenzeller Noble Memorial Museum

In 1885, Henry Gerhart Appenzeller established a school that began with English and core subjects. Over time, this institution expanded into Pai Chai Middle School, Pai Chai High School, and Pai Chai University. The school produced many famous alumni, including former South Korean president Rhee Syng-man.

The memorial hall opened in 2008 in the east wing of the original school building, which was built in 1916 and designated as a Seoul Monument. Spanning four levels from basement level 1 to the third floor (B1–3F), the museum offers dynamically arranged permanent exhibitions, annual special exhibitions, and special lectures. Visitors can comfortably explore the learning experience in approximately one hour.
