Located in Sinheung-dong, Gunsan-si, Jeonbuk-do, Gunsan Mallaengyi Village (군산 말랭이마을) is a cultural attraction rich in history and local art. The word "Mallaengyi" originates from a Jeolla dialect term meaning "the hillside," describing the village's elevated position.
Today, this hillside neighborhood blends local residential life with creative exhibition spaces, making it a memorable stop for international travelers exploring Korea.

History and Revival of Gunsan Mallaengyi Village
The neighborhood of Sinheung-dong initially formed in the 1930s and 1940s when Japanese residents built houses in the area. During the Korean War, refugees settled in Sinheung-dong and nearby Haemang-dong, constructing closely built homes made of wooden planks set on rocks, which eventually developed thatched roofs.

Following a period of urban decline caused by population outflow, a project was launched in 2014 to promote key tourist attractions in Jeonbuk-do. Through this initiative, nine artist residences and eight exhibition halls were built. Today, seven artist teams and over 50 local households reside harmoniously in the community.

Village Highlights and Viewpoints
Visitors walking through the village will discover eye-catching murals, photo zones, and unique sound spaces integrated throughout the hillside streets.

A walk up to Wolmyeongsan Mountain offers panoramic vistas of the spot where the Geumgang River meets the West Sea. This elevated viewpoint is especially renowned for its beautiful sunsets and night scenery.
