Ganghwa Seonwonsa Temple Site

Located in Incheon, the Ganghwa Seonwonsa Temple Site (강화 선원사지) offers visitors a peaceful look into Korea's medieval history. Constructed during the Goryeo dynasty as a spiritual refuge during wartime, this historic location holds immense cultural importance.

Today, exploring the Ganghwa Seonwonsa Temple Site provides travelers with a unique glimpse into the legacy of ancient Korean monastic architecture and historic preservation.

History of Ganghwa Seonwonsa Temple Site

The temple was built in 1245 by General Choi Wu during the 32nd year of King Gojong’s reign in the Goryeo dynasty. Its construction took place right after the capital was moved to Ganghwado Island to serve as a spiritual mainstay in resisting the Mongolian invasion. During its operational years, Seonwonsa was considered one of the two largest temples in Korea alongside Songgwangsa Temple.

Although the temple was completely destroyed during the early Joseon era—leaving only the physical site—it remains famous for its connection to Korean cultural heritage. The wooden blocks of the Palman Daejanggyeong (the Tripitaka Koreana, a complete collection of Buddhist scriptures), which are now housed in Haeinsa Temple in Hapcheon, are said to have been originally kept at Seonwonsa Temple. Historical accounts indicate the carved wood blocks were transferred from Seonwonsa to Heungcheonsa Temple during the Joseon era and later relocated to Haeinsa Temple during the reign of King Sejo.

Discovery and Site Features

The site was first discovered in 1976 during a surface examination around Ganghwado Island conducted by the Ganghwado Island Academic Research Team of Dongguk University. Recognizing its historic value, the government designated the location as Historic Site No. 259 in 1977.

Positioned on a mountain slope, the presumed area of the temple grounds spans approximately 250 meters from south to north and 170 meters from east to west. Visitors can walk the grounds and view the remaining structural foundations set against the natural hillside backdrop.
