The Historic Site of Anti-Mongolian Struggle in Hangpadu-ri, Jeju (제주 항파두리 항몽 유적), also known as the Jeju Hangpaduri Historic Site, offers visitors a deep look into Korea's medieval defense history. Located in Jeju-si, this historic attraction marks the location where the Sambyeolcho military unit made its final stand against invading Mongolian forces during the Goryeo dynasty.
History of Sambyeolcho at Jeju Hangpaduri Historic Site
The Sambyeolcho was a special defense military unit of the Goryeo dynasty. When the Goryeo government reached a peace agreement with Mongolian forces in February 1270 (the 11th year of King Wonjong), the Sambyeolcho opposed the decision and initiated an independent resistance movement born out of a patriotic belief to protect the nation.

After moving their base to Jindo in Jeollanam-do and facing a severe defeat, the unit relocated to Jeju-do, where they constructed Hangpaduseong Fortress. They continued fighting against the Mongolian forces for two additional years. Tragically, all unit members were killed in April 1273 (the 14th year of King Wonjong).

In 1977, the government invested 745 million KRW (about $544,595) to restore a section of the fortress and build a commemorative monument, completing the restoration work in June 1978.

Key Highlights and Surrounding Features
Today, visitors to the site can explore an exhibition hall, a memorial monument, and a unique mud fortress.
